Flower Pressing With Children
Pressing flowers is such a joyful activity and it can be enjoyed by all ages. I learnt to press flowers as a child, and my passion for it bloomed from there. Encouraging children to press flowers teaches them to notice their natural surroundings, opening up a whole new world of awe and wonder. It also helps them to learn about patience (flower pressing can’t be rushed!), and as both pressing flowers and creating with them is a hands-on activity, its great for keeping active little ones occupied.
If you are planning on pressing flowers with children, I’d recommend choosing flowers with simple forms as these have the best chance of pressing well - daisies (the sweet little treasures that pop up in our garden lawns are perfect), violas, buttercups and leaves all press brilliantly.
Once your flowers have been pressed, it’s time to get creative! Pressed flower cards are a nice simple activity to make with children. There are so many occasions where gifting a handmade card will brighten someone’s day such as Birthdays, Christmas, Mothers’ Day, or as a thank you for a special teacher at the end of term.
Connecting children to their surroundings and showing them the beauty of nature helps to nurture respect and admiration for the natural environment - flower pressing could be the spark that starts a lifelong journey of stewardship and care for our beautiful, fragile planet.
